Prof. Nadeem Qamar has had a 20 year long and enduring journey with National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi. Earning an MBBS degree from Liaquat Medical College, Jamshoro, Prof. Nadeem Qamar went abroad to complete his residency in Internal Medicine from Franklin Square Hospital, USA and received his fellowships in Cardiology and Angioplasty from McGill University Canada and Ottawa Heart Institute Canada respectively. He has trained countless cardiology fellows specializing in Interventional Cardiology and Catheterization Laboratory Techniques, has authored many research papers and is a lifetime member of Pakistan Cardiac Society and Pakistan Hypertension League. Prof. Qamar currently is leading the team as Executive Director of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi and also fulfilling the responsibilities of Secretary to Governing Body.
Prof. Fazle Rabbi is one of the best Cardiac surgeons in Pakistan. After completing his MBBS from DOW Medical College, Karachi, he obtained his higher education from UK and gained experience there in medical and cardiac surgical fields for 13 years. He acquired his MRCP from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and FRCS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He joined NICVD in 1996. Besides surgery for Coronary Heart Disease (CABG), his other interests include heart valve repairs and corrective surgery of congenital heart diseases.
Prof. Asal Khan Tareen did his MSc. from the University of Balochistan, Quetta and later he proceeded to complete his M.Phil. from Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI), Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), and his PhD from University of Karachi. He is currently Professor and Head of Biochemistry and Pathology Laboratory at NICVD which provides 24 hours services to the institute. He joined NICVD in 1990. He has authored 23 scientific papers, which have been presented and published in national and international meetings. He is currently member of Pakistan Hypertension League, Chemical Society of Pakistan and Pakistan Cardiac Society. Throughout the course of his career, he has acquired several years’ experience of teaching post-graduate and research PhD students in various institutions.
Prof. Syed Ishtiaq Rasool is a professionally qualified clinical and interventional cardiologist with over 25 years of experience at NICVD, Karachi and Cardiology Research Center (CRC), Moscow. He obtained his PhD in Cardiology and Certification in Interventional Cardiology in 1994 and later he joined NICVD in 1996 as a Certified Invasive Cardiologist. Since then he has played a significant role at NICVD in establishing a coronary angioplasty and valvuloplasty programme. He has also trained several interventional cardiology fellows at NICVD. He has facilitated data collection at NICVD in several studies. He has also acted as coordinator for 2 large multicentre trials, the “INTER HEART” and “Create GIK” studies conducted by Mac Master University, Onterio Canada. Inrecognition of his contribution in cardiology, he was awarded Fellowship of Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) and Fellowship of American College of Cardiology (FACC). He has organized several successful interventional workshops of “CARDIO Live”. He has so far attended many national and international workshops and symposia and he has authored over 30 scientific papers.
Professor Muhammad Anis Memon boarded the NICVD’s team in 1988 as a Senior Resident Medical officer and presently serves as an Associate Professor of Cardiology. His impressive academic portfolio includes Diploma in Cardiology and MD in Cardiology. He has been actively involved in teaching and giving lectures and teaches diagnostic procedure to Medical student, Nurses, House Officers and Trainee Resident Medical Officer. He has also acquired experience in organizing medical conferences and presently serves as a Supervisor for FCPS trainees. He has drafted 13 research papers which have been published in various national journals.
Dr. Nadeem Hassan Rizvi, MBBS, Dip Card (LON), MRCP(UK), FRCPE, FACC, FSCAI, joined NICVD in 2000 and is presently working as Professor of Interventional Cardiology, Director of Interventional Program & Cath Labs, and Director for NICVD Rehabilitation Program & Satellites Centres. Dr Rizvi has a special interest in complex coronary interventions. He has performed more than 10,000 cardiac interventional procedures. He is also one of the first certified implanter for TAVI in Pakistan. Dr. Rizvi also has a board eligible certification in Cardiac CT Angiography from John Hopkins University Hospital, USA, and is a founding member of British Society of Echocardiography and Pakistan Society of Interventional Cardiology and a member of Pakistan Cardiac Society. He has been the editor of Pakistan Heart Journal’s Interventional Cardiology section since 2012. Dr Rizvi remains actively involved in post graduate education in Cardiology and is Faculty member of Cardiology as well as an examiner at CPSP. He continues to write and present extensively at local, national and international forums as an expert in Cardiology.
Prof. Syed Zahid Jamal has been an integral part of the NICVD team since 2001. He is a certified Diplomate of American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Cardiology from New York and Boston respectively. He further proceeded to receive his Fellowship in Electrophysiology from Harvard University, USA. Apart from being the Director of Medical Education and Electrophysiology & Pacing Departments at NICVD, Prof. Zahid is also the person responsible for establishing the Electrophysiology Department in 2002, performing the first implantable defibrillator procedure (2002) and implanting the first heart failure device at NICVD (2004). He is a founding member of the Pakistan Heart Association which is an academic organization involved in conducting workshops/symposiums based on the latest updates in the field of cardiology.
Prof. Najma Patel is a remarkable cardiologist who specializes in the field of Paediatric Cardiology. After completing her MBBS, she received her fellowship (FCPS) from CPSP. She is also fellow of Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI), which is a mark of her excellence among interventional cardiologists and also fellow of American College of Cardiology. Her exceptional journey with NICVD dates back to 1994 when she joined this institution as a fellow and is now serving as Head of Paediatric Cardiology. She also has specialized in adult congenital heart diseases, congenital and structural heart defects intervention. She has performed more than 1200 percutaneous interventions including complex procedures. She is currently serving as Convenor of the committee member of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (Equivalent to Dean of Faculty) and also as a supervisor of FCPS Paediatric Cardiology.
Prof. Muhammad Saeed Talpur is a 1983 medical graduate from Liaquat Medical University, Jamshoro. He completed his M.Phil in Haematology and Pathology from Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) of Punjab University in 1990. He joined NICVD in 1994 after serving 11 years in Sindh Government Health Department. He is an active teaching faculty at NICVD and an honorary faculty member of Dow University of Health Sciences. He has authored 12 research papers published in national and international journals. He is also a life member of Pakistan Society of Haematology (PSH) and Pakistan Association of Pathologists (PAP).
Professor Tariq Ashraf has been an integral part of the NICVD team since 1989. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) in Cardiology, Fellow of the American College of Cardiologists (FACC), and Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI). Professor Tariq is also currently affiliated with the National Medical Center, Karachi.
Over the passage of his long and monumental career, he has trained several Fellows of College of Physicians and Surgeons and authored 30 Research paper which are published in National and International Journals. He specializes in the field of Interventional Cardiology with special interest in Peripheral Interventions.
